Medieval/Renaissance Costume Ideas
This will really help the “flavor” but remember, this is optional!
FOR MEN & BOYS.
- Make a Tabard/Tunic.
- Get 3 yards of solid colored fabric (whatever color looks good on you!).
- Lay it out on a table and cut a slit to put your head through.
- Put the fabric over your head so the fabric drapes over your chest and back (it will be open at the sides), put a belt or sash around your waist to hold it together and you have 90% of your costume done!
- A big blousy white or off white long sleeve shirt (the blousier the sleeves the better but any long sleeved shirt will really do fine .
IF YOU WANT TO GO FURTHER
- A Pair of breeches (simple pants that end just below the knees). A pair of pajama bottoms or other pants can be altered easily – try of use solid colors like black, brown, grey of any shade, greens even burgundy or dark red is O.K. OR just tuck your pants inside your socks (see below).
- A pair of very long socks – they need to go over the knees and be hidden under the breeches. They really shouldn’t be bright white – try tea dyeing a pair to make them look a little more homespun and worn.
- A pair of leather looking shoes (brown, black or dark grey). No boots or tennis shoes – slip on’s are best.
- A Vest or waistcoat or short waisted long sleeved jacket. Everyone wore this outer garment – it kept you warm and kept your shirt from getting really dirty. Modern vests really have the wrong lines but will work.
FOR WOMEN & GIRLS:
- A long sleeved dress that is calf length or ankle length.
- Solid earth tone colors are best but some simple patterns are O.K.
- Another option is to have a large plain colored skirt with a large blousy-armed blouse (an optional finishing piece would be a bodice/vest over the blouse).
IF YOU WANT TO GO FURTHER
- Simple slip on shoes.
- A Hat. Everyone wore a hat. Many women and girls wore a hair net under the hat or a small, close fitting bonnet type hat under their straw or felt wide brimmed hat.
- An Apron. Keep it cotton and not TOO bright white. It is a work horse so it shouldn’t be frilly or too pretty – it got REALLY dirty every day!
- The key to girl’s costumes is that they be basically solid fabrics with earth tone colors and to get a hat or bonnet that looks good.
